Founder Interview

Joshua M. Lutz

Google's own research shows that any business, in any industry, yields a 1-3% return on ANY efforts put towards advertising outreach. That means for every 100 cold calls you make…

So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.

I am Joshua M. Lutz, originally from Chicago. I graduated from the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2006 and took an internship at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan, NYC, and spent a couple of decades there until moving to NJ a few years ago. I now live 15 minutes from Manhattan in a town called Nutley. I went from sleeping under a bush on Columbus and Amsterdam in Harlem for a month to Jimi Hendrix's bedroom in '06, and the ride hasn't been any less wild ever since!

Tell us one thing you love about where you live now.

The only reason I'm here at all is for my wife and two boys. This is where they want to be, so I've made the sacrifice to live in New Jersey.

Tell us a little more about what your company does and how it started. How does it help your customers?

Lutz Multimedia LLC is an audio and visual agency that does everything from film props (Marty Supreme, A Complete Unknown, Deliver Me From Nowhere, Miami Vice, A Quiet Place) all the way to music recording at our commercial recording studio, JML Studios (Guns N' Roses, Lil Wayne, J. Lo, Joss Stone, Maroon 5).

If someone wants to start a business, what advice would you give them?

Google's own research shows that any business, in any industry, yields a 1-3% return on ANY efforts put towards advertising outreach. That means for every 100 cold calls you make to try and drum up ANY kind of business, only 1 person will say yes to you. Those are numbers 99% of new businesses simply can't or won't overcome... yet they must to have any kind of success in this world. Everyone wants to be successful, but no one wants to do the real work. They can and will succeed if they really want it!

What is one piece of feedback from a happy customer or client that you won't forget?

I'll never forget a client once told me they had grown at 5-7% for three decades, but after my marketing campaign they grew 78% in one calendar year. They promised me a bottle of vintage champagne and said I saved their practice. It meant the world to me to know what I do matters and has an impact on not only their company but their families as well.

Where do you see your company in the future?

I have been scoring film this year and see Lutz Multimedia LLC doing quite a bit more of this. I see us scoring a triple-A video game (flagship franchise) for a video game company very soon, which will change all of our lives!

What is the biggest misconception about your industry?

People assume that with talent and hard work comes success, yet it's so much more than that. Morals and ethics cannot be taught. You either have them or you don't, and they mean everything in business. All we really have in this life is our word and our work ethic.

What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business, and how did you deal with it?

Since I've moved to NJ, I've been mostly alone. No one in NYC wants to come across the river, so if I want to work with the best, I have to go to them, which is quite frustrating at times.

Who was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?

The usual: The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Paul Simon, Coltrane, Green Day, Lagwagon, the Descendents, Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley and Muse.

Any shoutouts you want to make?

God of Love who sustains me. Jasmin, Joshy and Jayden, the loves of my life. All my studio guys and my parents. Also, make sure to check out this wildly cool website full of art and music and interesting things at https://LutzMultimedia.com
