Having spent nearly 50 years in business and launched 60 ventures, I have learned that success rarely comes from having a flawless plan on day one. Instead, it comes from…

So nice to meet you! First off, what’s your name? Tell our readers a bit about yourself—where you’re from originally and where you live now.

I am Benson J. Fischer, founder and CEO of ZivZo Marketing Group, a full-service marketing and business consulting firm.

Background: I grew up just outside Washington, D.C., in Montgomery County, Maryland, and attended American University in Washington, D.C. I still live and work in Maryland today.

Entrepreneurial Journey: I have been in business for nearly 50 years, during which I have owned and operated 60 different businesses.

Current Focus: Through ZivZo Marketing Group, I help companies navigate the complexities of modern business by providing a comprehensive array of strategic marketing and consulting services.

Tell us one thing you love about where you live now.

One of the things I love most about living and working in Montgomery County, Maryland, is the incredible balance it offers. Being just 15 minutes outside of Washington, D.C., I have easy access to D.C. and Virginia. The entire area has incredible cultural institutions, history, and a vibrant professional community, yet you can easily step away into peaceful, tree-lined neighborhoods, beautiful parks, and the scenic landscapes of the Mid-Atlantic. That blend of dynamic business energy and natural, grounded surroundings makes it a wonderful place to call home.

Tell us a little more about what your company does and how it started. How does it help your customers?

ZivZo Marketing Group is a full-service marketing and business consulting firm designed to help companies accelerate growth, refine their brand positioning, and streamline operations. We provide a comprehensive array of services—spanning strategic marketing, digital presence, and core business consulting—tailored to meet each client's unique needs.

How It Started: With nearly 50 years of entrepreneurial experience and ownership across 60 different businesses, founding ZivZo was a natural evolution. Having navigated virtually every challenge a business owner can face—from startup hurdles to scaling and market shifts—I wanted to create a firm that channels those decades of real-world, in-the-trenches experience into actionable strategies for other entrepreneurs and enterprises.

How We Help Clients: We don't just offer high-level theories; we provide practical, battle-tested solutions. By combining comprehensive marketing execution with deep-dive business consulting, we help our customers cut through the noise, attract and retain target audiences, optimize their operations, and ultimately maximize their bottom line.

If someone wants to start a business, what advice would you give them?

Having spent nearly 50 years in business and launched 60 ventures, I have learned that success rarely comes from having a flawless plan on day one. Instead, it comes from adaptability, resilience, and a deep understanding of your market. If you are looking to start a business, here is the core advice I share with every entrepreneur:

Solve a Real Problem: Never start a business simply because an idea sounds cool; start it because it solves a genuine pain point for a specific group of people. If your product or service makes someone's life significantly easier or more profitable, you will always have a market.

Embrace Speed and Agility: Perfection is the enemy of progress. Too many entrepreneurs spend months or years trying to polish a concept before putting it out into the world. Launch your minimum viable product, gather real-world feedback from actual customers, and iterate quickly.

Master Cash Flow Management: You can have a brilliant product and incredible sales, but if you run out of cash, the business stops. Keep a close eye on your working capital, manage your overhead carefully, and always understand where your money is coming from and going.

Surround Yourself with Complementary Talent: You cannot—and should not try to—do everything yourself. Recognize your weaknesses early and bring in partners, team members, or advisors whose strengths fill those gaps.

Build Resilience: Entrepreneurship is a marathon filled with unexpected hurdles. The difference between those who succeed and those who fail is simply the willingness to adapt, learn from setbacks, and keep moving forward when things don't go according to plan.

What is one piece of feedback from a happy customer or client that you won't forget?

Over a nearly 50-year career spanning 60 businesses, I've received a lot of wonderful feedback, but one particular message from a client at ZivZo Marketing Group truly stands out and remains unforgettable.

The Situation: A long-time business owner came to us feeling completely stuck. Their company had plateaued, marketing efforts were yielding diminishing returns, and the stress of trying to pivot in a shifting digital landscape was taking a heavy toll on both their business and personal life.

The Turning Point: We rolled up our sleeves, restructured their brand positioning, streamlined their operational workflows, and implemented a targeted, data-driven marketing strategy to capture a fresh segment of their market.

The Feedback: A few months later, the owner sent a note saying that not only had their revenue jumped significantly, but for the first time in years, they were able to take a weekend off without worrying if the business would fall apart. They wrote: "You didn't just save our marketing; you gave us our lives and our passion back."

That feedback is something I will never forget because it encapsulates the ultimate goal of what we do at ZivZo—true business consulting and marketing shouldn't just drive numbers on a spreadsheet; it should empower entrepreneurs to regain control, scale sustainably, and rediscover the joy of building something great.

Where do you see your company in the future?

As we look ahead, the vision for ZivZo Marketing Group is rooted in continuous evolution, deeper technological integration, and an expanded reach to help even more entrepreneurs scale their visions.

Scaling Our Impact: Over the next few years, we plan to expand our footprint to support a broader range of businesses, from high-growth startups to established enterprises looking to reinvent themselves in a fast-paced market.

Embracing Innovation: The marketing and business landscape is shifting faster than ever. We are continuously integrating advanced data analytics, emerging digital channels, and AI-driven insights into our service offerings—ensuring our clients always stay a step ahead of the competition.

Expanding Thought Leadership: Drawing from nearly 50 years of experience across 60 businesses, I want to expand our educational initiatives—such as mentorship programs, masterclasses, and executive workshops—to pass down battle-tested entrepreneurial wisdom to the next generation of business leaders.

Ultimately, our goal remains the same: to be the premier trusted partner for businesses striving not just to survive, but to dominate their industries with clarity and confidence.

What is the biggest misconception about your industry?

In the worlds of marketing and business consulting, there is one major myth that I encounter time and time again, and it can be fatal for growing companies:

The Misconception: That marketing and consulting are simply "expenses" or "costs" you cut when things get tight, and that a great product will naturally sell itself if it's good enough.

The Reality: The truth is that strategic marketing and professional business consulting are not costs—they are investments with a measurable return. Too many entrepreneurs view marketing as just paying for ads or a pretty logo, and consulting as paying someone to state the obvious. In reality, when done right, it is the engine that drives predictable revenue, optimizes operations, and de-risks growth. A brilliant product or service sitting in the shadows will always lose to an average product with a brilliant, highly targeted go-to-market strategy. Changing that mindset from "expense" to "growth driver" is often the exact turning point that takes a business from struggling to scaling.

What has been one of your biggest struggles building your business, and how did you deal with it?

Throughout a career spanning nearly 50 years and 60 different business ventures—including building ZivZo Marketing Group—one of the biggest struggles I faced early on was learning how to let go of control and truly delegate.

The Struggle: When you are an entrepreneur who has built businesses from the ground up, your company feels like an extension of yourself. In the early days, you want to oversee every detail, approve every piece of work, and handle critical decisions personally because you believe "nobody can do it quite like I can." While that hands-on grit is essential to launch a business, it eventually becomes a massive bottleneck. You hit a ceiling where your own time and energy limit how fast the company can grow.

How I Dealt With It: I had to fundamentally shift my mindset from being a doer to being a builder. I learned to focus heavily on three key strategies:

Hiring Superior Talent: I actively sought out experts whose skills far exceeded my own in their specific domains, rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades.

Building Systems and Processes: Instead of managing by whim, we documented clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) so team members had a reliable framework to execute autonomously.

Trusting the Team: I learned to delegate not just the tasks, but the ownership of those tasks.

Stepping back allowed the team to step up, accelerated our growth, and taught me that a true leader's real job is empowering others to succeed.

What was your favorite music artist and athlete growing up?

Growing up with The Who means you had an incredible soundtrack of high-energy rock—from Baba O'Riley to My Generation—defining that era.

And cheering on Sonny Jurgensen as the quarterback for the Washington Redskins puts you right in the golden age of football. Jurgensen was legendary for his fierce competitiveness, brilliant arm talent, and that classic toughness that made him a beloved fixture in D.C. sports history.

Any shoutouts you want to make?

No successful career happens in a vacuum, and looking back over nearly 50 years in business, I owe an immense debt of gratitude to the people who helped guide my path.

A special shout-out goes to Steve Maged, Richard Schimel, and Marvin Jawyer. All three of these men had a monumental impact on my business career. Each one of them added another layer of wisdom, strategic insight, and resilience to my professional foundation, helping shape the leader and entrepreneur I am today. Surrounding yourself with individuals of that caliber is one of the true secrets to sustained success.
